When I was invited to participate in the 2021 BBC online Tectonics Festival, I knew that I wanted to create a piece that tied in with "Drilling" – the orchestral composition of mine the BBC Glasgow Symphony had programmed to premiere at the 2020 Tectonic Festival. The performance had to be cancelled due to the pandemic.

The slow moving texture of the piece is almost entirely made out out of accordion sounds with a few added field recordings I made during the many epic bike rides I took in 2020: hums from air conditioners and an electric power station , the sound of the Marine Parkway Bridge near Fort Tilden, which amplifies the sound of cars into a cacophony of overtones, an ice-cream van and many others.

There are also several cameo appearances by drummer Tom Rainey, electronics artist Sam Pluta and myself, taken from unused takes from previous recording sessions.

This piece has an almost tar-like texture, it is in a way reminiscent of what 2020 felt like: a dark, seemingly unmoving mud river, with little nuance and much fear, but also glimpses of hope, peace, and a deep sense of gratitude for love and friendship. 2021 is limping right behind...let's hope 2022 will eventually bring better things.
